Universal Legacy Store: A Retrospective on CityWalk’s Nostalgic Gem

UPDATE (March 2026): The Universal Legacy Store at CityWalk Orlando is now permanently closed. This article has been updated to serve as a retrospective on this beloved nostalgic retail location that celebrated Universal Orlando’s history from 2022 until its closure in 2025.

Universal Orlando converted the original Universal Studios Store into the Universal Legacy Store-focusing on the nostalgia and history of the Universal Orlando Resort since its opening in 1990. The store operated from 2022 until its permanent closure in September 2025.

One of two gargoyles that guard the entrance to the new store. They originally sat atop the original Universal Studios archway in the early years of the resort.

The Legacy Store was created when Universal moved the main Universal Studios Store to a new, larger location across the way. Universal dubbed the new store a “Premier Retail Experience,” while the original space was transformed into a celebration of the resort’s history.

What the Legacy Store Offered

During its operation, the Legacy Store featured:

  • Memorabilia and Props: Authentic items from Universal Orlando’s 30+ year history
  • Artwork and Photos: Historical images and concept art from the resort’s development
  • Retired Attraction Tributes: Dedicated sections to beloved closed attractions including:
    • Back to the Future: The Ride
    • Jaws
    • Dueling Dragons
    • Wild Wild Wild West Stunt Show
  • Retro Merchandise: Vintage-inspired items celebrating Universal’s classic IPs
  • The Gargoyles: Two iconic gargoyles that originally sat atop the original Universal Studios archway

The Store’s Evolution

When it first opened in 2022, the Legacy Store sold typical Universal merchandise while transitioning to retro-inspired “legacy” merchandise. Over time, it became a destination for fans seeking:

  • Vintage-style t-shirts from classic attractions
  • Collectible items from retired rides
  • Historical photos and artwork
  • Nostalgic souvenirs not available in the main stores

Permanent Closure (September 2025)

As of September 2025, the Universal Legacy Store is permanently closed. The closure marks the end of an era for this unique retail concept that celebrated Universal Orlando’s rich history.

While the Legacy Store is no longer open, guests can still find Universal merchandise at:

  • The Universal Studios Store (CityWalk) – The main retail location with expanded offerings
  • Epic Universe Preview Center – Features Epic Universe-themed merchandise and resort displays
  • Park-specific shops – Each land and attraction has its own themed retail locations

Legacy and Impact

The Universal Legacy Store served as a reminder of how far Universal Orlando Resort has come since opening in 1990. For longtime fans, it was a place to reminisce about favorite attractions of the past while celebrating the resort’s continued evolution.

From the gargoyles that once watched over the original archway to the tributes to beloved retired rides, the Legacy Store preserved pieces of Universal history that might otherwise have been forgotten.
